A group of 20 children with spastic cerebral palsy underwent selective dorsal rhizotomy for alleviation of spasticity. Pre- and postoperatively, cortical somatosensory evoked responses (cSSEP), H reflex and F wave studies were done. Clinically there was dramatic reduction of tone without noticeable sensory loss. The electrophysiologic studies showed several findings: (1) many children have abnormal cSSEP preoperatively; (2) surgery seldom leads to a loss of cSSEP; (3) in many patients, there is a noteworthy improvement in the cSSEP wave form; (4) some children have electrophysiologic evidence of spinal cord dysfunction preoperatively and (5) Hmax/Mmax ratio decreases after surgery confirming decrease in tone. 相似文献

Ovarian function is examined in 35 Lese women inhabiting the Ituri Forest of northeastern Zaire over a period of 4 months through measurements of progesterone in saliva samples collected twice weekly. Ovulatory frequency is found to be only 56% on average, with a pattern of age variation similar to that observed in western women, though lower in level at each age. Average luteal progesterone levels of the Lese women are lower than those of Boston controls even if only ovulatory cycles are considered. Women with the poorest nutritional status, inferred from longitudinal weight changes and weight for height, show the greatest compromise of ovarian function, and the average ovulatory frequency of the whole sample declines in parallel with a period of weight loss over four months. It is suggested that low ovulatory frequency and luteal insufficiency contribute to the low fecundity of the Lese population and that nutritional status is likely to be one of the ecological factors modulating this effect. 相似文献

A modified glyoxylic acid technique for obtaining dopamine histofluorescence from cultured mesencephalic cells is described. This method requires only two solutions: one contains glyoxylic acid, sucrose and monobasic potassium phosphate and is used at room temperature, the other is a Hepes buffered solution used at 37 C. Relatively high concentrations of a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and dopamine are added to the cultures to load dopaminergic neurons; the cell bodies and their processes take up and hold dopamine quickly and evenly. The cultures are dipped in a glyoxylic acid solution, dried in air, heated for 5 min and coverslipped with mineral oil. Since the cultures remain in their culture dishes, the entire procedure takes less than 2 hr. The green histofluorescence characteristic of dopamine is seen when the cultures are viewed by standard fluorescence microscopy. Various cell body types and sizes can be distinguished, as well as the complete extent of their processes and varicosities. 相似文献

Climate change is anticipated to exacerbate the extinction risk of species whose persistence is already compromised by habitat loss, invasive species, disease, or other stressors. In coastal areas of the southeastern United States (USA), many imperiled vertebrates are vulnerable to hurricanes, which climate models predict to become more severe in the 21st century. Despite this escalating threat, explicit adaptation strategies that address hurricane threats, in particular, and climate change more generally, are largely underrepresented in recovery planning and implementation. We provide a basis for stronger emphasis on strategic planning for imperiled species facing the increasing threat of catastrophic hurricanes. Our reasoning comes from observations of short‐term environmental and biological impacts of Hurricane Michael, which impacted the Gulf Coast of the southeastern USA in October 2018. During this storm, St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, located along the northern Gulf of Mexico's coast in the panhandle region of Florida, received storm surge that was 3.0–3.6 m (NAVD88) above sea level. Storm surge pushed sea water into some ephemeral freshwater ponds used for breeding by the federally threatened frosted flatwoods salamander (Ambystoma cingulatum). After the storm, specific conductance across all ponds measured varied from 80 to 23,100 µS/cm, compared to 75 to 445 µS/cm in spring 2018. For 17 overwashed wetlands that were measured in both spring and fall 2018, posthurricane conductance observations were, on average, more than 90 times higher than in the previous spring, setting the stage for varying population responses across this coastal landscape. Importantly, we found live individual flatwoods salamanders at both overwashed and non‐overwashed sites, although we cannot yet assess the demographic consequences of this storm. We outline actions that could be incorporated into climate adaptation strategies and recovery planning for imperiled species, like A. cingulatum, that are associated with freshwater coastal wetlands in hurricane‐prone regions. 相似文献

Summary A stable spheroplast fusion product of the polyploid brewing strain Saccharomyces uvarum (cares bergensis) , strain 21 and a genetically constructed diploid Saccharomyces diastaticus, strain 1384 has been shown to have improved ethanol producing capability in defined media (Panchal et al., 1982). This fusion product, strain 1400 was further subjected to fermentations in defined media containing glucose substrate and varying concentrations of the non-metabolized sugars sorbitol or mannitol.While the fermentation efficiencies of all the three strains decreased with increasing osmotic pressure imparted by sorbitol or mannitol, the detrimental effect was least apparent with the fusion product than with either of the fusion partners. 1. At 6 weeks of age, the time of most rapid body growth, fast growing broiler chickens showed more right ventricular hypertrophy than slower growing chickens. 2. The degree of right ventricular hypertrophy was directly related to blood haematocrit and indirectly related to arterial oxygen saturation (estimated in the chickens using an ear oximeter designed for man). 3. When oxygen saturation was estimated sequentially from 6 to 17 weeks of age, mean oxygenation improved with age, partly due to the death of the chickens with the worst saturations, but also because of an improvement in oxygenation of the survivors. 相似文献
